What
is the Compaq MP1600 Microportable Projector?
Compaq is announcing the smallest portable projector
in the market, the Compaq MP1600 Microportable. At only
4.2 lbs. (1.9 kg), the Compaq MP1600 is the world's
first Microportable projector. And at 175 cubic inches
(2861 cubic cm) in an innovative tower formation, it
delivers the highest portability index of any other
portable projector in the market. It is 55% more portable
than the next smallest projector in the market. Until
now, most "portable" projectors weighed 7 lbs. (3.17
kg) or more and were quite bulky - in fact, the MP1600
Microportable Projector takes so little space that it
fits into the same carrying case with most notebook
computers. The MP1600 is easy to use and is compatible
with virtually every computer - just plug it in and
present. Setting up (and packing up) now takes only
a short moment (set-up in less than 3 minutes, including
booting up the PC and optimizing the displayed image),
whereas before it took up to 10-15 minutes or more.
The picture quality is truly outstanding, because it
uses the new and revolutionary DLP projection technology,
and it is bright enough to present to an audience with
the lights on.
How
much will the Compaq MP1600 cost?
The Compaq MP1600 will have a street price of $7199.00
How
competitive is the Compaq MP1600?
The Compaq MP1600 the lightest, smallest and lowest
cost XGA projector in the market. In addition, the Compaq
MP1600 has been tested with the most rigorous testing
criteria to ensure that the projector can withstand
the most challenging conditions of a portable device.
It has even achieved FCC class B certification for home
use which is more rigorous than the standard FCC class
A certification granted most other portable projectors.
What
is included in with the Compaq MP1600?
The Compaq MP1600 includes the Compaq MP1600 Microportable
projector, a carrying case, a CD with convenient presentation
utility, a multilingual users guide, a quick setup guide,
VGA and DFP cables, a lens cleaning cloth, a lens cap
and a handle.
What
is DLP technology?
A DLP or Digital Light Projection system is technology
based on DMD or Digital Micromirror Devices which was
developed by Texas Instruments in 1996. Unlike LCD technology,
that pushes light through liquid crystals, the DMD reflects
light off of its 786,432 microscopic mirrors.

Projectors
are notoriously difficult to configure with PC is the
Compaq MP1600 any easier?
To ensure traveling business people can take their show
on any road, the MP1600 was specifically designed to
function just like Compaq's Plug n' Play monitors. The
projector instantly recognizes the signal being sent
from the host PC and automatically adjusts the necessary
settings to fill the screen and ensure that what is
on the computer screen is exactly what is projected.
In fact, the Compaq MP1600 provides unequaled compatibility
to virtually all computer products, including Compaq
and third-party desktops, notebooks, and handheld computers,
as well as analog and digital graphics cards.
With
such a small projector do I have to give up picture
quality?
A crystal clear, life-like displayed image is the sum
total of five image characteristics, including brightness,
uniformity, resolution, seamlessness, and contrast.
When they are all at optimal levels, they work in concert
to provide a high-quality picture any presenter would
be proud and confident to project.
BRIGHTNESS
In the world of projecting images, the primary measurement
of a high-quality image is brightness. The industry
measures brightness in lumens: the more lumens, the
brighter the images will be. As a general rule of thumb,
500 ANSI lumens will produce readable digital images
and saturated colors in semi-lit rooms. With 600 lumens,
the Compaq MP1600 Microportable Projector is easily
readable in the semi-light environments of most offices
and conference rooms. What's more, it has as much brightness,
or more, as projectors that are two times its size.
This ensures that your images will always be as bright
as possible, and easy to read in any almost any situation.
UNIFORMITY.
Uniformity gauges the difference between the brightest
(the middle) and dimmest (the edges) points on a screen.
When uniformity is high, the image brightness is equalized
from the center to the corners. When it's low, too much
light is projected in the center and not enough on the
edges. The majority of portable projectors today offer
a uniformity of between only 30% and 50%, which results
in a visibly distracting imbalance of brightness across
the screen. With a uniformity that is greater than 90%,
the MP1600 projects uniformly bright images with no
hot spots or faded edges.
RESOLUTION
The Compaq MP1600 Microportable Projector offers a native
resolution of XGA(1024x768 pixels), but also employs
a scaling algorithm that automatically scales to XGA
from VGA (640x480) through SXGA (1280x1024) resolutions.
This means that virtually no matter what video resolution
your computer is set to, the Compaq MP1600 Microportable
Projector will automatically scale it to an optimum
XGA resolution. XGA is widely regarded as the optimal
resolution for presentations because it delivers the
optimum projected image based on ergonomic tests that
measured productivity, eye-strain, and fatigue.

SEAMLESSNESS
When presenters have worked for hours to create digital
images that look sharp and crystal clear on their monitors,
they expect to have the image look as sharp and clear
projected on the screen. Unfortunately, with traditional
LCD technologies instead of a sharp image what often
occurs is "the screen door effect." This grainy, pixilated
effect occurs because the horizontal and vertical spaces
between the liquid crystals in the projector block the
light. The result is that only about 70% of the light
shines through.
CONTRAST.
Contrast is the difference between the projected white
and black images. When your projector has an optimum
contrast ratio, your images will be sharper and more
readable. Similarly, a low contrast ratio results in
dull, washed out images. Most LCD projectors have a
contrast ratio of no more than 150:1. Thanks to an impressive
contrast ratio of 400:1, the Compaq MP1600 Microportable
Projector offers richer, truer blacks, brighter and
more vibrant whites, and by far an overall improved
image.

What
is the warranty on the Compaq MP1600?
Compaq is offering the best warranty in the industry!
What
is the portability index and how does the MP1600 rate?
The portability index is a measure of the combination
of weight and volume. It is considered the best measure
of carrying convenience of a particular set of products.
Among portable projectors, the Compaq MP1600 has the
best portability index rating and is 55% more portable
than its closest competitor.
What
is DFP?
The DFP (Digital Flat Panel) port is a new port
for projectors. It enables an end-to-end digital signal
to be sent from a PC to the projected image. Most projectors
only have a VGA port. Utilizing the VGA port forces
the image to be converted from a digital format to an
analog format and then back to a digital format. This
conversion causes the image quality to be reduced. By
implementing this new digital standard Compaq is taking
advantage of the digital capabilities of the projector
and paving the way to improved image projection.
What
options are offered for the Compaq MP1600?
Compaq offers a video module kit and a lamp module kit.
What
is the Compaq MP1600 Video Adapter?
This Video Adapter option plugs into the DFP port of
the Compaq MP1600 and enables additional video connections
like VCR's, camcorders or DVD players. A convenient
button on the module lets the user toggle between a
computer image and a video image. The two connectors
on the Video adapter are S-video and RCA composite video
supporting SECAM, PAL and NTSC formats.
<top>
What
is the expected lifetime of the lamp module?
The
lamp is expected to have an average life of 1500 hours.
If the projector is used conservatively 2 hours every
working day the lamp would last more than 2 years.
Why
is Compaq entering the projector business?
Compaq is the #1 computer display company in
the world and portable projectors are a natural extension
of Compaq's display business. Projectors employ similar
components to Flat Panel Displays and the technology
and image criteria are similar. Projectors are simply
a different type of display. From a portable computer
perspective, portable projectors provide an ideal end-to-end
solution when coupled with the portable computer for
the "road warrior" or professional presenter.
